One million dollars. American dollars. That is what an international celebrity, who has not been named, will fork out to rent a villa in Clifton, a luxurious coastal suburb in Cape Town, during the 2010 FIFA Football World Cup. That comes down to approximately 33.333 USD per day. A record, for the city and for the country.

The letting agent, Clinton Braude of Ronnie Matthews Estates, is happy. Well, who wouldn’t be – considering the commission he will be receiving. “It is a  rental record for not only the city, but the country,” he said in an interview with a local newspaper, adding that he was not allowed to disclose the exact location of the house. It is in the exclusive part of Clifton and not on the beachfront.”

The celebrity crash pad has allegedly six bedrooms, each en suite, and the total property is more than 1 000m².

It is said that, although the price tag of the Clifton villa is exceptionally high, more of such deals will follow. British film producer Mike Jefferies, who manages his Clifton property by the same letting agent, is for instance trying to let his house for close to 47.000 USD a day. His humble home is situated is on Nettleton Road, which is the uppermost road in Clifton bordering Lion’s Head and the Table Mountain National Park.

More than 400 000 people are expected to descend on the country in June. Braude said there were not enough hotel rooms across the various grades to house all the visitors. The run for accommodation is expected straight after the Final Draw. “People are going to be forced to look at renting private properties and alternatives to hotels,” he said.
