German in court for bomb scare

The German press photographer who was behind one of the false bomb threats during the Final Draw of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which took place in Cape Town on December 4 2009, has been released on a 5000 rand (±450 euro) bail. His passport however, remains in possession of the police.

68-year old Bernd Fischer was arrested on Friday December 4 2009 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre after joking about having a bomb in his camera bag. Than he allegedly dropped his bag and ran off. Security guards caught him after which he was detained for the weekend.

Fischer appeared at the cape Magistrates Court on Monday Fischer, who says he has lived in South Africa on and off as for 17 or 18 years, appeared in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court after spending the weekend in police holding cells.

His lawyer Jan Hildebrand, told the court that his client was a pensioner who survived on his savings, “a small pension” of 360 euro (about R4000) a month and a monthly income of a maximum of à500 (R5500).

Magistrate Vusi Mhlanga granted Fischer bail with the conditions that he check in at the Sea Point police station every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Fischer has apparently a two-bedroom flat in this Cape suburb. He furthermore cannot leave his flat without written permission from the investigating officer, who would give it only for work reasons. Fischer’s passport remains in the hands of the police until the case, which has been postponed until January 15 2010 for further investigation, has been concluded.
