“Embrace Bafana, buy tickets!”

With the performance of Bafana Bafana – once one of the best soccer teams in Africa – leaving much to wish for, tickets sales for matches between South Africa’s national squad and their opponents are very slow. Very very slow. This needs to change, says South Africa’s Football Association SAFA.

“We need to create a vibe in South Africa for the World Cup,” said new SAFA chief executive Lesley Sedibe in an interview with The Sowetan. “We need to make sure that our people rally behind Bafana Bafana. The first thing we need to do is to identify what the challenges faced by our people are regarding the issue of tickets.”

“We have to remember that the sale of tickets for the World Cup is different from what we are accustomed to, we are involved in discussions with our sponsors on this matter. One of the things we need to do as a matter of urgency is to find the way to reach out to our people and also identify a simpler way of ensuring they have access to the tickets.”

“We are meeting Fifa before the end of this month, where the issue of tickets will also be discussed. The big challenge we are facing is the huge demand for certain tickets, Category 4,” Sedibe added, saying he was disappointed that most World Cup tickets bought in South Africa were for teams like England, Germany, Italy and Argentina.

Bafana Bafana has lost a lot of support in South Africa, predominantly as a result of poor performances. South Africa’s national team for instance did not qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, which takes place in Angola. The squad furthermore has lost most matches it played over the past year.
