Maradona: South Africa rocks!

Argentina’s coach Diego Maradona just loves South Africa. During his visit to South Africa, five months before the kick-off of the 2010 FIFA World Cup on June 11 2010, he has showered the local authorities and the 2010 organising committee with compliments.

First of all, Maradona – famous for his Hand of God goal during the 1986 FIFA World Cup quarter-final against England – said he was impressed by Soccer City in Johannesburg, the venue for the opening match and the final as well as other key matches. The  stadium, the biggest world cup stadium in South Africa with a capacity of 90.000, will most probably open in March this year.

“I have played in many stadiums around the world but this one is big, and one of the most beautiful I have ever seen,” he said.  I would have loved to have played here but my time is up.”

Maradona also dispelled fears that South Africa was not safe. “This is what I would like to say to the world: I spent the entire week in South Africa and everything is very good and the people very friendly. This will be a great World Cup with no doubts of security. I will tell my players that they only have to think of playing football when they come here and worry about nothing else. This is the impression that I will take to my country.”

Argentina, which has chosen their base camp in Pretoria / Tshwane, forms part of group B together with Nigeria, Korea Republic / South Korea and Greece. Argentina’ s match schedule is as follows:

  • June 12 2010 @ 16:00: Argentina vs Nigeria – Johannesburg (Ellis Park)
  • June 17, 2010 @ 13:30: Argentina vs Korea Republic: Johannesburg (Soccer City)
  • June 22 2010 @ 20:30: Greece vs Argentina – Polokwane
