No base camps for Eastern Cape

Now that the Cameroonian national football team – the Indomitable Lions – has chosen Umhlanga Rocks in South Africa’s Kwa-Zulu-Natal province instead of East London / Buffalo City in the Eastern Cape, it seems that according to a leaked official FIFA document the latter province will be missing out completely when it comes to hosting base camps.

This includes Port Elisabeth – one of the nine 2010 world cup host cities.

Buffalo City / East London municipality official Roy Young, who spearheads the city’s drive to host the Cameroon team during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, said that while Umhlanga Rocks was stated as the preferred destination, he still felt confident the team would come to East London.

“I am still 95% sure they will come here,” he said.

So far, none of the 32 qualified teams have chosen interest in establishing their base camp in the Eastern Cape.
