Cape Town’s 1st match: No hickups!

Apart from treating football fans from Cape Town to a great match between Ajax Cape Town and Santos, as well as a fantastic football Derby, the inaugural match at Cape Town Stadium on January 23 had a practical purpose: the see how the stadium would function during a large event.

According to all stakeholders, including the City of Cape Town, Provincial Government, South African Police Services and the Stadium Operator,  Cape Tow’s brand new world cup stadium in Greenpoint is ready as no major flaws in the planning and execution of the first test event were uncovered.

However, all aspects of safety, security, transport and logistics were  thoroughly analysed. The lessons that will be learned form the first match at Cape Town Stadium will be applied to improve spectator experience and safety for the second event: On Saturday 6 February 2010, Cape Town Stadium will host a rugby match between the Stormers and Boland.

During the debriefing between all stakeholders looked at weather conditions, safety and security, deployment of safety and security staff, the volumes of spectators through gates, transport flows for shuttle buses, private vehicles and pedestrians. Some of the outcomes:

* Stadium noise levels both inside and outside were measured and satisfactory health tests were done on food served at the stadium. At the same time, safety and security incidents were logged. This electronic event tool will have all the information available shortly after a stadium event for debriefing and future planning.

* Only three law enforcement incidents and six traffic incidents were logged while Emergency Medical Services attended to 15 medical and seven trauma cases.
