South Africa’s health facilities – both hospitals and clinics – are ready for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, said Deputy Health Minister Molefi Sefularo this week during a workshop that aimed to identify challenges and gaps in the health sector, and the need for a task team to remove obstacles to providing comprehensive health and medical care.

World Health Organisation (WHO) country representative Dr Stella Anyangwe said that everyone, including the United Nations’ agencies, wanted South Africa to succeed in hosting the Football World Cup.

She encouraged the South African government to make use of WHO technical assistance in training, documentation preparation and ensuring safe water and proper sanitation.

Local organising committee (LOC) representative Victor Ramathasela said South Africa was ready to provide health services of world standard to football fans who plan to travel to the Rainbow nation for the 2010 world cup soccer. “I can confidently and boldly say that we are ready to provide health services of world standards and more,” he said. “After this two-day gathering we know what needs to be done moving forward. As LOC and partner, we are ready and willing to assist.”
