‘Can I bring camera to stadium?’

Many people have asked me the following question over and over again: Can I take my camera to the stadiums during the world cup? The short answer is yes, but there is one thing you need to keep in mind.

The Fifa stadium rules state that you can bring a camera that is intended for personal use. However, these days many people (read: non professional photographers) have an SLR camera with a multitude of lenses and equipment. They do not intend to use their baby for commercial use, but merely for personal snap shots.

Nevertheless, the chance of you being denied access to the stadium because your SLR camera is significant. For what ever reason, there is confusion with regards to SLRs.

A spokesperson of the LOC therefore told me that football fans are advised to only bring small automatic cameras. I was told the following: “Your camera will not be confiscated, but there is a chance you will be asked to go back to your car or hotel to get rid of your camera. Football fans with small cameras are safe.”

So play it safe and leave your fancy equipment at home.
